The Alentejo - Travel Guide

Redondo

The town of Redondo is set in the heart of the vine growing district. A cheerful little town with an imposing castle, built by Dom Dinis in the 14th Century, and several examples of wrought-iron balconies and window boxes, particularly on the houses in Rua São Miguel.

This area also has many megalithic monuments indicating the regions popularity during the Neolithic period. Redondo is also renowned for its pottery. The hand-painted pottery has a distinctive homely style, with plates decorated with fresh floral designs or charming pastoral life.

The wineregion Redondo is located between Évora and Estremos and is limited to the hills of "Serra d'Ossa" and the Vigia Dam. The dominent varieties for the red wine are Aragonez, Castelão, Tinta Caiada and Trincadeira. The white wines are blended from Antão Vaz, Arinto, Fernão Pires, Rabo de Ovelha and Síria.

The local gastronomy offers typical dishes of the Alentejo, such as "sopa de cação" (shark soup) and "cozido de grão" (pork and chickpea stew).
